CI Playfight is a kind of Contact Improvisation in which we dance and play with the combat theme.
By adding the element of playfighting to Contact Improvisation, we extend a variety of movements and lead us where the magic happens—outside our comfort zone in a safe, non-competitive environment.
It improves our ability to adapt.
We allow ourselves to gamble as kids, a young foal or kitten.
Engaging in play naturally propels us into a flow state as we harmonise with our surroundings, bringing joy.
In this dynamic meditation, we are not planning our movements; we flow into the present, which unlocks our instincts and intuition.
The essence of playfighting lies in heightened awareness, feeling and understanding of aspects of our movement.
Expanding and opening instead of shrinking, becoming fluid, and uplifting is a very effective and natural way to prevent stress.
The result is that we become more confident, assertive and stronger but still sensitive and loving humans.
No wonder martial arts have accumulated such deep knowledge over thousands of years. The desire to survive is an excellent motivation to understand one’s being.
A good warrior is healthy, so around martial arts arises knowledge to develop our vital power and keep us youthful.
1. Be aware of your safety.
2. Be aware of your playfight partner’s safety.
3. We don’t compare. Out dance has no winner.
4. We are trying to use as little power as possible. Our touch is soft and smooth, like a breeze.
5. we try to manage the partner’s flow rather than move him.
6. We try to flow at the same speed as our partner or even slower. We are looking for a smart solution. We don’t replace the solution with speed or brute power.
7. We keep flow; we don’t aim to hold the partner in any position (unlike martial arts like wrestling, BJJ, etc.)
8. Feel free to finish the playfight anytime.
9. Play with (what would be in self-defence) ‘mistakes’. Enjoy these experiences out of your comfort zone in a safe environment. Then you learn a lot.
10. Remove all sharp and hard objects, like watches and jewellery, from your body. It’s better to wear clothes without straps, zips, buttons, a belt with a big buckle, etc.
